Part of: Print on Demand Etsy Guide: Printify vs Printful · Print on demand
The best Placeit alternative depends on what you sell. For digital products — planners, printables, KDP interiors — Craftific designs the product and makes its mockups and listing copy, free to start. For apparel and print-on-demand photos, Placeit remains the strongest library, at $14.95 a month or $89.69 a year.
Placeit, part of Envato, is a web app with four kinds of template:
The mental model: Placeit makes pictures of products, not the products. For a T-shirt seller that is most of the job. For a planner seller it is the last 10%.
| Plan | Price | Downloads | Commercial use | Watermark |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Watermarked previews | No | Yes |
| Monthly | $14.95/month | Unlimited | Yes | No |
| Yearly | $89.69/year (about $7.47/month) | Unlimited | Yes | No |
Prices as published in 2025–2026 reviews and on Capterra; Placeit runs frequent promotions, so check the current price before subscribing.
Insight: Placeit's yearly plan costs about six months of the monthly plan. If you will make new listings for more than six months, yearly is cheaper; if you need a burst of mockups for a shop launch, take one month, download everything you need, and cancel.
Etsy buyers of printables and planners decide from the first photo, at thumbnail size. A few rules matter more than which tool made the image:
| Feature | Craftific.com | Placeit |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Design, export and list digital products | Mockups and quick designs |
| Product templates | 570 planners, journals, printables, KDP interiors | Social, flyer and logo templates |
| Mockups | Tablet, desk, clipboard and book-cover scenes for digital products | Apparel, devices, prints, mugs and more — far larger library |
| Video | 15-second listing reel from your product | Video templates |
| Print-ready export | PDF and PNG at 300 DPI; KDP interiors on Pro | Not a print-file tool |
| Etsy listing copy | AI title, 13 tags and description (Pro) | No |
| Free plan | Yes, with commercial licence on exports | Watermarked, no commercial use |
| Paid price | $19/mo Pro | $14.95/mo or $89.69/yr |
The honest summary: Placeit is the better mockup library, especially for apparel and print-on-demand. Craftific is the better tool when the product itself is digital, because it creates the file you sell, the mockups for it and the listing in one place. A print-on-demand seller should probably have Placeit; a printable seller probably does not need it.
Craftific's mockup generator works from the design you just made, so there is no export-and-upload step: pick a scene — a tablet on a café table, a clipboard, a marble desk, a book cover at an angle — and download the image. Book covers get a true perspective warp baked into the exported image rather than a flat skew. The same product can then become a 15-second reel for Etsy's listing video or Pinterest.
This set covers what buyers need to see, whichever tool makes it:
Divide the subscription by the listings you will actually make with it:
| Listings a year | Placeit yearly ($89.69) | Placeit monthly, 12 months ($179.40) |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | $7.47 per listing | $14.95 per listing |
| 50 | $1.79 per listing | $3.59 per listing |
| 100 | $0.90 per listing | $1.79 per listing |
| 250 | $0.36 per listing | $0.72 per listing |
At 50 or more listings a year, the yearly plan costs less than $2 per listing — cheap if the photos lift conversion even slightly. At a dozen listings a year, photographing your own printed pages is the better deal.
These photos show buyers the honest printed result, which reduces "it looked different in the photo" messages.
Use Placeit if you sell apparel, mugs or other print-on-demand products, or need many lifestyle mockups quickly. Its models and scenes are hard to reproduce yourself, and apparel buyers want to see a garment on a person before they buy. The yearly plan is good value for an active POD shop.
Use Craftific if you sell planners, journals, printables or KDP books, and want the product, mockups and listing from one tool. Start with the free Etsy templates; for print-on-demand, see our print on demand Etsy guide.
You can design for free, but free downloads are watermarked and come without commercial rights. To use a mockup in an Etsy listing you need a paid plan, which unlocks unlimited downloads and commercial use.
$14.95 billed monthly, or $89.69 billed yearly (about $7.47 a month). Both plans have the same features and unlimited downloads; only the billing differs. Check Placeit's site for current offers.
Yes, with a paid plan — mockups downloaded while subscribed include commercial usage rights for product listings. Make sure the mockup shows your real product at its real size; Etsy buyers complain when a printable looks larger or glossier in the photo than it prints.
Your own photos. A printed page on a clean desk, shot near a window, often converts better than a stock mockup for printables. Free mockup tools exist too, and Craftific's mockup generator is included on its free plan.
Not with Placeit's range. Craftific's mockups are built for digital products — planners on tablets, prints on desks, book covers at an angle — and a 15-second video reel. For apparel on models, Placeit is the better tool.
Placeit for mockups, Canva for designing the artwork. Most print-on-demand sellers who pay for one of them pay for Placeit, because Canva's mockup options are thinner and POD listings live or die on the product photo.
