A good Etsy description opens with one or two sentences that name the product using your title's main keyword, then lists exactly what's included, how the download works, file formats and sizes, and two or three answers to common questions. Etsy shows plain text only, so use capitalised labels and bullet characters, not formatting.
The structure the generator writes
Every description follows the same five-part structure, because it answers buyers' questions in the order they ask them:
| Section | What it says | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Opening (2 sentences) | What the product is, using your main keyword in the first sentence | Shows in the preview before "Read more" |
| WHAT'S INCLUDED | Pages, sizes, versions and extras as bullets | Vague lists cause refund requests |
| HOW IT WORKS | Instant download, no physical item shipped, where the files are | Prevents "where is my order?" messages |
| FILE DETAILS | Formats, sizes, resolution, what software opens it | Stops buyers who cannot use the format |
| PLEASE NOTE and FAQ | Colour variation, personal-use terms, 3 short Q&As | Answers the questions you would otherwise get |
You choose the tone — friendly, professional, minimal or warm — and the format: PDF, Canva link, PNG or JPG, Notion link, KDP interior or a spreadsheet.
Insight: The best description is the one that makes your inbox quiet. Every question buyers send you before or after purchase is a line missing from the description. Keep a list for a month, then add the answers.
Example: a printable planner description
This is the kind of plain-text output the generator produces, ready to paste:
Stay on top of your day with this ADHD planner printable, built for adults who need structure without overwhelm. Undated pages let you start any day and skip days without wasting paper.
WHAT'S INCLUDED • 30 undated pages: daily and weekly layouts • US Letter and A4 sizes • Brain dump, priority and time-blocking sections
HOW IT WORKS • Instant download — no physical item will be shipped • Find your files under Purchases and reviews in your Etsy account
FILE DETAILS • PDF, print at home or at a print shop
PLEASE NOTE • Colours may vary slightly between screens and printers • For personal use only
How to write a description that converts
- Start with the product, not the story. "This printable budget planner tracks bills, savings and spending in one place" beats "Are you tired of feeling stressed about money?".
- Use the main keyword once, early. Repeat the phrase from your title in the first sentence, naturally. Do not stuff it.
- List the contents precisely. "30 pages" not "lots of pages"; "US Letter and A4" not "multiple sizes".
- Say what is not included. "Frame not included" on wall art and "no physical item" on every download prevent disappointed reviews.
- Explain delivery in one line. Where the files are, and how to open them.
- Answer the top three questions. Printing, device compatibility, editing.
- Read it on a phone. Short lines and bullets survive small screens; long, dense paragraphs do not.
Description details by product type
| Product | Must mention |
|---|---|
| Printable planner | Page count, sizes, dated or undated, print-at-home tips |
| Digital planner | Compatible apps, hyperlinks, landscape or portrait, how to import |
| Wall art | Sizes and ratios included, resolution, frame not included |
| Canva template | Free Canva account needed, what is editable, how the link works |
| Notion template | Free Notion account, duplicate link, setup guide |
| KDP interior | Trim size, page count, bleed or no bleed, licence for publishing |
| Wedding stationery | What text is editable, which items are in the suite, printing advice |
Where the description is read
- The listing page on mobile. Most shoppers see only the first lines, with the rest collapsed behind "Read more". Those lines must say what the product is and what is included.
- The listing page on desktop. More of the text shows, so the bullets and file details do their work here.
- Google results. Etsy listing pages rank in Google, and Google often builds the snippet under the title from the start of the description. A clear opening sentence doubles as your Google pitch.
- After purchase. Buyers reread the description when they open the files. Delivery and printing instructions save you messages.
Rewriting descriptions you already have
- Export or list your top 20 listings by views in Etsy Stats.
- Check each opening — does the first sentence name the product and include the title's main phrase?
- Check the contents list against the actual files: pages, sizes, formats.
- Add the missing "how it works" line for every digital download.
- Add answers to the questions buyers have actually sent you for that product.
- Change one listing at a time and compare its conversion over the next few weeks before rewriting the rest.
Writing for buyers outside the US
Many digital buyers print on A4 paper, not US Letter. If your file includes both, say so near the top; if it includes only one, say which, and give the size in millimetres as well as inches. Avoid US-only references such as specific store names or holidays unless the product is about them, and spell out dates in a way every reader understands — "15 March" rather than "3/15".
Common description mistakes
Copying the title into the first line. The opening should add detail, not repeat the title word for word.
Keyword lists at the bottom. Blocks of keywords at the end do not help ranking and make the listing look untrustworthy to the buyers reading it. Put those phrases in your tags instead.
Leaving out the format. Buyers who expected a PDF and receive a Canva link — or the reverse — ask for refunds and leave the reviews that follow.
Promising what the file does not have. Sizes, page counts and editability must match the file exactly, every time.
Forgetting the licence. If the buyer may not resell or share the file, say so plainly.
Writing one description for every listing. A shared template is a good start, but each listing needs its own contents list and its own answers. Buyers comparing two of your listings notice when the descriptions are identical, and it makes both look less carefully made.
Finish the listing
Pair the description with a clear title from the Etsy title generator and 13 tags from the Etsy tags generator, then check everything with the Etsy listing optimization checklist. For first-photo guidance, use the Etsy thumbnail tool; for the full listing method, see the Etsy SEO guide.
Etsy Description Generator: Frequently Asked Questions
Etsy matches searches mainly through your title, tags, categories and attributes. The description's job is to convert the buyer who clicked and answer their questions; it also gives Google readable text about your product. Write it for the buyer first.
Long enough to answer what a buyer would otherwise message about — usually 150 to 300 words for a digital product. The generator aims for 900–1,600 characters. The first two lines matter most, because they show before "Read more".
No. Etsy displays descriptions as plain text, so Markdown symbols and HTML show up as stray characters. Use short CAPITALISED labels, line breaks and "•" bullets to structure it, as the generator does.
What the buyer gets (pages, sizes, versions), that nothing is shipped, where to find the files after purchase, the file format and how to open it, any licence limits, and a note that colours vary by screen and printer.
It never invents facts you did not give it. If you leave out page counts or sizes, it marks the gap so you can fill it in — an invented "40 pages" in a description is a refund waiting to happen.
