Quick answer

Amazon book categories are the browse sections where a book appears and earns best-seller rankings. On KDP you choose up to three. For low-content books, the easiest categories to enter are those where ranked titles have few reviews — in October 2026, Calendars (median 35 reviews) and Fantasy & Sci-Fi Coloring (481) were far easier than Journal Writing Self-Help (2,242).

The entry bar for 14 low-content categories

Median review count of the titles ranked in each Amazon Best Sellers category — the number of reviews a typical competing book already has. Lower means easier to enter.

Category Median reviews on a ranked title Current score What it means
Calendars 35 90 Very low bar — calendars are dated, so each year's titles start fresh
Fantasy & Sci-Fi Coloring 481 70 Open to new, well-made books
Literary Diaries & Journals 559 70 Open; specific journals can rank
Humorous Coloring Books 678 70 Open, if the humour lands
Religious & Inspirational Coloring 822 70 Open, with a defined audience
Mandalas & Patterns Coloring 985 70 Moderate
Planners 1,134 50 Established — niche down
Animal Coloring Books 1,151 50 Established
Flowers & Landscapes Coloring 1,292 50 Established
Account Books & Journals 1,453 50 Established — logbooks need a clear niche
Coloring Books for Grown-Ups 1,474 50 Broad and crowded
Guided Journals 1,816 50 Crowded at the top
Children's Coloring Books 2,148 50 Very crowded
Journal Writing Self-Help 2,242 50 Very crowded

Collected from Amazon.com Best Sellers on 9 October 2026 by Craftific's data pipeline. Scores are 0–100; demand data is not yet included, so scores currently reflect competition.

Insight: The calendar number is a reminder to read the context, not just the score. Calendars look easy because every edition is new each year — they also only sell for a few months. A low entry bar in a seasonal category is an opportunity with a deadline.

How to read the score fairly

How KDP categories work

  1. Three per format. During paperback setup, KDP asks you to choose up to three categories from Amazon's browse tree. The ebook and hardcover choose their own.
  2. Rankings are per category. A book can be #50 in a broad category and #3 in a narrow one. The narrow ranking is the one that earns a "#1 Best Seller" badge and visibility on that list.
  3. Relevance decides conversion. Shoppers browsing a category expect what it says. A book in the wrong place gets views and no sales.
  4. You can change them. Categories can be edited later from the book's details; changes take effect after review. Change them when the book's audience becomes clearer from its reviews, not every week.

Choosing categories for a low-content book

  1. List every category your book truly fits. A gratitude journal fits Guided Journals, Journal Writing Self-Help and possibly a Mindfulness category.
  2. Check the entry bar for each one with the tool above.
  3. Pick one specific, lower-bar category where a new book can rank — this is where visibility comes from.
  4. Add the most relevant broad category — it brings browsing buyers even if you rank lower.
  5. Use the third for the next-best fit, often a niche audience category such as nurses, teachers or new mothers.
  6. Match your keywords to the categories. KDP's seven keyword boxes should use the same words buyers use in those categories.

Example: three category sets

Book Category 1 (specific, rankable) Category 2 (relevant, broader) Category 3 (audience or theme)
Gratitude journal for women Literary Diaries & Journals Guided Journals A self-help or mindfulness category
Swear-word adult colouring book Humorous Coloring Books Coloring Books for Grown-Ups A humour category
Undated weekly planner Planners Account Books & Journals A time-management category
Dragon colouring book Fantasy & Sci-Fi Coloring Coloring Books for Grown-Ups Animal Coloring Books, if dragons count for your audience

Category mistakes that hold books back

Choosing only the biggest categories. A new book in Journal Writing Self-Help competes with titles carrying a median of 2,242 reviews; without a specific category alongside it, it will not be seen.

Choosing irrelevant categories to rank. Ranking briefly in a category your buyers do not browse brings no sales and can confuse Amazon's recommendations.

Ignoring the season. Calendars and dated planners need to be live months before the year starts.

Never revisiting. Check categories every few months; a book with reviews can move up to a broader category.

Splitting one audience across three similar categories. Three near-identical categories reach the same shoppers three times. Use the third slot for a different angle — an audience, a theme or a use — so the book is found by a new group of buyers.

Amazon Book Categories: Frequently Asked Questions

How many categories can I choose on KDP?

Up to three Amazon categories per book format, chosen during title setup. Pick the three where your book is most relevant and has a realistic chance of ranking, rather than the three biggest.

How does the category score work?

It blends demand (60%), competition (25%) and monetisability (15%), and re-weights when a part has no data rather than scoring it as zero. At present the published scores rest mainly on competition: the median review count of ranked titles, collected from Amazon's Best Sellers pages.

What does a median review count tell me?

The entry bar. If a typical ranked title in a category has 2,000 reviews, a new book is competing with years of accumulated social proof. A category where ranked titles have a few hundred reviews is one a new book can realistically climb.

Does the tool show sales or royalties?

No. Amazon does not publish sales figures, so the tool does not estimate them. Every number is read from Amazon's public Best Sellers pages, or is a stated calculation from those numbers, with the collection date shown.

Should I pick the least competitive category?

Only if your book genuinely belongs there. A gratitude journal placed in an unrelated low-competition category will rank briefly and convert badly. Choose the most specific category that truly fits, then the next two most relevant.

Are Amazon categories the same as BISAC codes?

They are different systems. BISAC codes are industry subject codes used by distributors and libraries; Amazon categories are Amazon's own browse tree. KDP now asks for Amazon categories directly. Our KDP trim sizes picker suggests BISAC codes for your metadata.

Is a high score always good?

A high score means demand looks strong relative to how crowded the category is. It is a shortlisting signal, not a verdict. Your cover, interior quality, keywords, and pricing still decide whether a specific book sells.

How fresh is the data?

Amazon Best Sellers data is collected daily. Each result shows the collection date in the basis line, so you can see for yourself how current it is.

Why is competition measured with review counts?

Review count is the one competitive signal Amazon publishes openly on Best Sellers pages. It is a proxy for how established the incumbents are, not a sales figure, and it is labelled that way everywhere it appears.
