JPG, PNG or GIF — the formats Etsy accepts
Your photo is processed entirely in your browser — it is never uploaded to Craftific.com or any server.
Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 pixels wide and tall, and a first photo of at least 635 pixels to avoid ranking lower. Use a landscape or square first photo — 3000 × 2250 px (4:3) is a safe default — and leave a border so Etsy's square, portrait and landscape thumbnail crops never cut the product.
Etsy photo requirements in one table
Etsy's help centre publishes these requirements for shop images. Everything this tool checks comes from it.
| Image | Etsy's guidance | What this tool checks |
|---|---|---|
| Listing photos | At least 2000 px wide and tall recommended | Shortest side against 2000 px |
| First listing photo | At least 635 px wide and tall, or it may show lower in search | Shortest side against 635 px |
| First photo shape | Landscape or square; square crops are discouraged | Flags portrait photos |
| Thumbnail | Leave enough border to crop to square, portrait and landscape | Shows all three crops |
| File types | .jpg, .gif or .png; no animated GIFs or transparent PNGs | Flags other formats |
| File size | Files over 1 MB may not finish uploading | Shows file size |
| Shop icon | 500 × 500 px recommended | — |
| Big shop banner | At least 1200 × 300 px | — |

How Etsy turns your photo into a thumbnail
Etsy does not ask you for a separate thumbnail. It takes the first listing photo and crops it differently in different places: a square tile in some grids, a landscape card in others, a taller crop on some mobile screens. The full photo appears only on the listing page itself.
That is why the safe photo is not "the right ratio" but the right composition: the product in the centre, with clear space on every side. A photo built that way survives any crop. A photo where the product fills the frame edge to edge loses its edges in every crop but one.
Insight: Design for the smallest view first. Most buyers scroll search results on a phone, where your thumbnail is about the width of a thumb. If the product is not recognisable at the 80-pixel "scroll size" preview above, no amount of resolution will save the click.
How to make a thumbnail that gets clicks
- Start large. Shoot or export at 3000 × 2250 px (4:3 landscape). It meets Etsy's 2000 px recommendation with room to crop.
- Centre the product and keep at least 10% of the frame clear on each side, so the square and portrait crops keep it whole.
- Use one clear subject. For a printable, show one page or a cover — not a collage of eight tiny pages that turns to noise at thumbnail size.
- Add large text only if it helps. "Printable Budget Planner — 25 pages" in big type tells a scrolling buyer what they are looking at. Small text does not survive the shrink.
- Check contrast. A white planner on a white desk disappears in a grid of white listings. Use a coloured background or a shadow.
- Preview it here, then fix the crop with Etsy's thumbnail adjust option after uploading.
Thumbnail ideas by product type
| Product | What the first photo should show | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Printable planner | Cover or best page, straight on, with title and page count | A collage of every page |
| Digital planner | The planner on a tablet screen, cover visible | Tablet so small the planner is unreadable |
| Wall art | The print framed on a wall, art filling most of the frame | Room so wide the art is a speck |
| Wedding stationery | One invitation, flat, with soft styling | Every item in the suite at once |
| Notion template | The main dashboard in a laptop frame, readable headings | Full-screen screenshot with tiny text |
| KDP journal | Book cover at an angle with one interior page beside it | Cover only, no hint of the interior |
A full photo set for a digital download
The first photo is the thumbnail; the rest answer a buyer's questions in the order they ask them. Use the same 3000 × 2250 px canvas for every image so the gallery looks consistent.
| Photo | Job | What to show |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Earn the click | Cover or hero page, product name, page count |
| 2 | Show the main page | One full page, straight on, readable |
| 3 | Show it in use | Printed on a desk or on a tablet, ideally filled in |
| 4 | Show what is included | A grid of every page type with the total count |
| 5 | Show sizes | US Letter and A4 side by side, labelled |
| 6 | Explain delivery | "Instant download — print at home or at a print shop" |
| 7 | Show variations | Colour options or dated/undated versions, if any |
| 8 | Reassure | What the buyer receives: PDF, PNG or a template link |
Etsy listings can also include a short video. A 5–15 second flip through the pages answers "what's inside?" faster than any still image.
Exporting at the right size
- Phone camera: most phones shoot 4:3 by default at well over 2000 px. Shoot in daylight, then crop — never zoom digitally.
- Canva or any design tool: create a custom canvas of 3000 × 2250 px, design there, and download as JPG. Avoid PNG for photos; the files are larger and can hit the 1 MB problem.
- Craftific: the mockup generator exports listing images from the product you designed, so the page in the photo is the page the buyer gets.
- Screenshots of digital products: take them on the largest screen you have, then place them on a 3000 × 2250 px background rather than uploading a narrow screenshot as it is.
Common thumbnail problems and fixes
Product cut off on mobile. The product fills the frame. Add space around it, or re-crop with the adjust-thumbnail option.
Blurry zoom. The original is under 2000 px or was compressed twice. Export once, at full size, as a high-quality JPG. Editing a downloaded Etsy photo and re-uploading it compresses it again, so always work from your original file.
Upload stalls. The file is over about 1 MB. Reduce JPG quality slightly or the pixel size to around 3000 px on the long side.
Looks dull next to competitors. Search your main keyword on Etsy and screenshot the first row of results. Your thumbnail should be the easiest one in that row to understand, not the busiest.
Wrong format. WEBP and HEIC files from phones and design tools need converting to JPG or PNG before Etsy will take them.
Inconsistent gallery. Photos at different ratios make the listing page jump as buyers swipe. Export every image on the same canvas so the gallery feels like one product, not a pile of screenshots.
The rest of the listing
A thumbnail earns the click; the title and tags decide whether the listing is shown at all. Write a title that leads with what the product is using the Etsy title generator, fill all 13 tags with the Etsy tags generator, and run the whole listing through the Etsy listing optimization checklist. For mockup options beyond your own photos, see our Placeit alternative comparison, and for page sizes of the printable itself, the print size chart.
Etsy Thumbnail Size: Frequently Asked Questions
There is no single size. Etsy builds thumbnails from your first listing photo and crops it to square, portrait or landscape depending on the page and device. Upload a large landscape or square photo with the product centred, and every crop works.
At least 2000 × 2000 pixels is Etsy's recommendation; 3000 × 2250 px (4:3 landscape) meets it and zooms sharply. Under 635 pixels on either side, Etsy says the first photo may show up lower in search.
Open the listing, select the first photo and use the adjust-thumbnail option to drag and zoom the crop. Check the result on your phone as well as a computer, because mobile search often shows a different crop from desktop.
Convert them first. Etsy's help centre lists .jpg, .gif and .png as the accepted image types, and animated GIFs and transparent PNGs are not supported. Exporting as JPG at high quality is the usual choice for photos.
Usually the original is too small or was compressed twice. Upload a photo at least 2000 px on both sides, saved once as a high-quality JPG under about 1 MB — Etsy warns that larger files may not finish uploading.
No. The photo is read and drawn entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to Craftific or any server, and refreshing the page discards it.
