Etsy Ads are pay-per-click ads inside Etsy search, from a minimum budget of $1 a day, with Etsy setting the bids. They are worth it when your return on ad spend beats your break-even ROAS — about 1.2 for a digital download with an 85% margin, but 4 for a print-on-demand shirt with a 25% margin.
Etsy Ads are Etsy's own advertising inside its search results and pages. You set a daily budget — the minimum is $1 — and choose which listings to advertise. Etsy decides where to show them and how much to bid on each search. You pay only when a shopper clicks an ad, whether or not they buy.
What you control is the budget, which listings are advertised, and how well those listings convert once clicked. What you do not control is the cost per click, which Etsy sets.
Two numbers decide whether ads pay for themselves:
| Product | Margin after Etsy fees and costs | Break-even ROAS |
|---|---|---|
| Printable or digital download | about 85% | about 1.2 |
| Notion template with some design cost | about 60% | about 1.7 |
| Printed book or product via print on demand | about 40% | 2.5 |
| Print-on-demand t-shirt or mug | about 25% | 4.0 |
Work out your exact figure with the Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads calculator.
Insight: Digital sellers have a structural advantage with ads. A printable only needs to return about $1.20 for each $1 of ads to break even, while a print-on-demand shirt needs about $4. A ROAS that would sink a physical shop can be healthy profit for a digital one.
You sell a $9.99 printable and keep about $8.59 after Etsy's fees. In a month you spend $30 on ads:
| Outcome | Orders from ads | Revenue | ROAS | You keep after fees | Profit from ads |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Good month | 6 | $59.94 | 2.0 | $51.54 | $21.54 |
| Near break-even | 4 | $39.96 | 1.33 | $34.36 | $4.36 |
| Poor month | 2 | $19.98 | 0.67 | $17.18 | −$12.82 |
The ads only make sense in the first two rows. If after 30 days you are in the third, stop advertising that listing and improve it.
| Etsy Ads | Offsite Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Inside Etsy | Google, social media, other sites |
| Cost | Per click, from $1 a day | 15% of attributed sales (12% over $10,000 a year), max $100 per order |
| Control | Budget and listings | Opt out only if under $10,000 a year |
| Risk | You pay for clicks that do not buy | You pay only on sales |

You choose a daily budget, from $1 a day, and pay per click up to that budget. Etsy sets the bid for each search automatically. Normal Etsy fees still apply to any sale the ads bring.
Often, for listings that already sell. A $9.99 printable keeps about $8.59 after fees, so ads break even at a ROAS of roughly 1.2. If your ads return $2 for every $1 spent, they are adding profit.
About 30 days without changing the budget or the advertised listings. A few days of data is mostly noise; stopping and starting resets what you are measuring.
Etsy Ads run inside Etsy, on a budget you set, charged per click. Offsite Ads run on Google, social media and other sites, cost nothing up front, and charge 12–15% of a sale they bring in, capped at $100 per order.
Usually the listing, not the ad. Clicks without orders point to the first photo, price or description not matching what the shopper expected. Fix the listing before spending more.
